[Az-Geocaching] Prescott Daily Courier Geocaching Article

I thought the article was pretty straight forward and absent of malice. Certainly the reporter was not a geocaching zealot, but neither is she an eco-freak like some who have written for the Rep in the past--Christine who?

The "Tread Lightly" guideline is quite good, but as Brian stated, it's really just using common sense. Often when one does something stupid in placing a cache, a fellow cacher will point it out in the log.

The biggest problem isn't necessarily with more joining the Geocaching fold, but sheer ignorance. Common sense would dictate following a defined trail when out in the hills caching, but there always seems to be those who have this opinion that they are immune and that going off-trail and trailblazing the presumably quickest way to the cache, is the best thing to do. A few more after the first do it, and the next thing you know, a spider trail forms. More and more traffic starts to take this route as the wear eventually implies that it is an acceptable trail, altering the landscape for years to come. Unfortunately, it's tough to teach common sense for those who appear to lack it. Most cachers understand the simple logic of staying on the trail and minimizing impact, but it's the few who give everyone else a black eye by mere association. It's the reason some land managers have a flawed opinion of cachers, because of that ONE bad experience they've had, which forever shapes their perception of the community as a whole.

Maybe it is a wake up call. As more people get into this hobby the chances of problems increase.

As a newbie I found some of the info very helpful.

This article does not portray Geocaching in a very positive way.
