[Az-Geocaching] RE: Az-Geocaching digest, Vol 1 #1819 - 6 msgs

My daughter (14) was bitten on the toe by a scorpion a few weeks ago.
Arizona poison control was most helpful. They advised it would be very
painful and soon get tingly and numb (it did). You won't always see the
sting site, and won't have swelling. The pain and numbness travels up the
leg. The worst pain hits at hour six, then it starts to subside. Apply cold
water cloths, not ice, and over the counter pain medicine. If the numbness
increases until it covers most of the body call them back or seek medical
attention, or if nausea sets in. They said there was no danger in sleeping
after a sting; the rest will help ease the pain. The pain will linger for 2
days to two weeks. And yes, small children and elderly need special
attention. If you get stung, call poison control. They even called back
after a few hours to check on us.

Not education in the sense of being a medical expert in the field, but I'll
throw my .02 worth in.

I understand that scorpion stings are much like bee stings -- most people
will not die from it, though like bee stings, the severly allergic person
can be in major trouble from a sting.

I've been bitten twice, about 10 years ago. Once I was asleep, and started
having a dream where my arm was really hurting. After a few minutes, I woke
up, and my arm hurt like hell. I discovered a scorpion in bed with me.
After beating the scorpion to death with my shoe.... (hey you would too)...
I had one majorly sore arm from the sting. Could barely move it for 2 days,
and took a week before it was 100% again.

The second time I got grazed on the toe by a scorpion in my back yard.
Barely hurt at all.

But I still beat the scorpion to death with my shoe.

Obviously the very young and the elderly are much more at risk to problems
from stings than the average schmoe, but it ain't fun nonetheless. I guess
it helps to know where they hide -- they're ground dwellers, and prefer
cool, dark places inside and out.

I saw the biggest scorpion I have ever seen in my life (and I have seen alot

of them!) while at PANDA77's "Brown Gang Cache" near Black Canyon City. I
turned over a large flat rock and between it and the rock under it there was

a big ol' scorpion. I dont think I have seen one that big before. Of course,

I jumped back a few feet very quickly!! I was talking to PANDA at the time
on the phone when I saw it.

Someone will surely have more knowledge on scorpion bites... but basically,
you would be better off not getting stung by one!

The bark scorpion is the more venomous one as I recall. It is also the
smaller of the scorpions we find around here.

Any scorpion should be avoided of course, however the "Bark Scorpion" is one

of the most poisonous in Az. And size does not necessarily matter..... some
of the smaller varieties can pack a more potent sting than the bigger ones.
In any event, it would be wise to use gloves or kick over rocks before
exploring around them. I myself have not been stung, but I have seen young
children who have. The smaller you are, it seems, the more malevolent the
effects of the sting can be.Be careful out there on the trails. And KEEP ON
CACHIN'.

One of the 'glowing' highlights of the Halloween Radioactive event was all
the scorpions we found under blacklight along the perimeter of the park
itself. In probably a 30' area, I think we spotted >6 of them roaming
around, and made enough ruckus that they found elsewhere to hide so the kids
attending weren't threatened (as much).
